Years ago, when my wife and I first got the idea for a beach-based competition, we decided it should have its own name.

My wife Cathy and I are both natives of Maryland and Ocean City was the right place at the right time for us.

Now we have more than 400 teams competing and can draw upwards of 20,000 people into the area. With teams coming from eight states on the East Coast we’re one of the largest national competitions.

The prizes for competitors are primarily monetary.

We’ve chose the Transplant Resource Center, an organ donation center, to be the recipient of this year’s benefit.

We’re set up like a rock concert. It’s a theatrical production. We have a stage, our own lights, it’s an amazing sight to see.

My wife and I really wanted to reward the hard work and commitment of these coaches who sacrifice so much of their time and energy to prepare these teams for the show..

If there is a member of a squad who has been practicing a particularly interesting move or breathtaking stunt, we’ll reward that.

I’d compare it to a bowl game in college football. We’re giving out close to $1 million in prizes including trophies, jackets, cash prizes and a car.

It was very important to both my wife and myself that there be a charitable tie-in for the competition.
