There were more houses damaged by the tornadoes, but fewer houses totally destroyed. The tornado doesn’t compare.

The older stations often had only one bay, and now there is a minimum of two, often three. Also the new equipment (engines and ladders) does not fit in the older stations.

We frankly have been pretty aggressive in the construction of new fire stations.
